General measures that help with most stones

Drink to dilute

Aim for a urine output of about 2.5–3 litres a day (urine should look pale straw, not dark). This is the single most protective habit for every stone type.

Go easy on salt

High sodium intake pushes more calcium into the urine. Keep salt under roughly 5–6 g a day.

Don't cut calcium

Counterintuitively, normal dietary calcium (dairy, etc.) binds oxalate in the gut and lowers stone risk. Restricting it usually backfires.

Moderate animal protein

Large amounts of meat, egg, and fish raise uric acid and calcium excretion and lower citrate — a stone-friendly combination.

Bring in citrate

Lemon or lime water adds citrate, a natural inhibitor that keeps crystals from sticking together.

Watch the oxalate-heavy foods

Spinach, beetroot, nuts, chocolate, and strong tea are oxalate-rich — worth moderating if you form oxalate stones.
